Family Photo taken by George; maaaddd love for this woman. |
Happy belated Mother’s Day to all of you wonderful mothers out there! Vinny & I drove back home this past weekend to commemorate Mother’s Day with our family, returning to LA late Sunday evening with tons of food. We had initially agreed to make a card for our mom, but realized that the woman really only spends her money on three things: food, her family, & jewelry. Realistically, she’d probably throw the card away within a month & everything else such as flowers, chocolate, cake, & other presents are deemed as a “waste of money.” Why jewelry doesn’t fall under that category, I’ll never really know. We try not to question her logic since she’s satisfied with the two of us helping her in the kitchen & would scowl at any purchases we made for her, provided that she has a coupon exempting her from paying the full price we would’ve paid.

Dead herbal terrariums. |
Speaking of practical/sentimental gifts, some time ago, I made my mom herbal terrariums. Before departing for her 3 week vacation to New Zealand, Australia, & Tahiti, she placed the terrariums outside to ensure their survival. She never brought them back inside & they shriveled & died. RIP herbal terrariums. We were so close to being able to harvest you.
Mother’s Day Feast. |
So my mother doesn’t have a green thumb, but she’s still one of the most amazing women I know & she cracks me up all the time. There are far too many appreciative comments, apologies, & thanks we owe her for everything she’s sacrificed for us, but it’s not really worth expressing via some social media she has no idea how to function or care about. Instead, Vinny & I helped her put together dinner for our family. Vinny grilled & sautéed, while I made mashed potatoes & seafood chowder.
Food! |
Digressing from this past Sunday & jumping back two weeks, Josh & I went to Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes, where we subsequently were maliciously attacked by fleas/flies/random insects. I’m only half-kidding; definitely a hyperbole. The scenic views & company were worth the exposure to swarms of flies.

FYI, those rocks did not skip,…well, at least no more than twice. More pictures & recipes to follow soon-ish.

Looks like you had a great time with your Mum and family! I wish my Mum had the same thoughts on Mothers Day. I think I’d prefer to cook lunch with her than buying useless cards and gifts and spending too much at a cafe or restaurant somewhere.
Your lunch looks delicious 🙂

Daw does your mom expect lots of well thought out gifts or something elaborate? We’re really fortunate she doesn’t care too much haha. & it was actually dinner! Pretty late in the day too, but the sun was still out so that was nice.

Mother’s day is in March in the UK so I always find it odd when I hear people speaking about Mother’s day now. I automatically think that I must have forgotten haha! My mum also thinks gifts like that are a waste of money. I bought my mum a gift card for her favourite shop for Mother’s day this year so that she could buy what she wanted.
Abalone Cove looks very beautiful. Ahhrr it makes me want to come to America so badly!!
I’m working at Asda, although I wish I could have got a job at Sainsbury’s because there is a shop literally across the road from where I live and it wouldn’t take me so long to get to work everyday! I haven’t tried the Sainsbury’s burger sauce but it must be pretty amazing. I wonder if Asda make some? Often you find that products are made by the same company for different shops, so they might be similar.
I have a Pinterest account but I haven’t really used it much. I think I’ll take your advice and look for some inspiration on there. Thank you. 🙂

Ahhh I like Asda! Much more on the cheaper side than that other store that I really don’t remember the name of…but it had two parts to it. Meh, not important. How do to like Asda so far?
I’m going to figure out how to get burger sauce shipped to me one way or another. A friend of mine shipped it to me last time, but I don’t want to hassle people to satiate my addiction for burger sauce! It’s so unbecoming haha.
Ahh I wonder who picks the appropriate date for Mother’s Day, because I honestly never know when it is until May comes around & I get emails from companies trying to sell their Mother’s Day specials. :X
When are you planning on making a trip to the States?
Holly
Hmm, I’m not sure which supermarket has two parts to it. All I can think of is smaller stores like Tesco Express. They are always expensive!
Working at Asda can get a little repetitive at times but I like it, and the money is very handy!
I’d love to come to the States as soon as I can but unfortunately the flights are so expensive! It probably won’t be until I’ve finished my degree and I am in a stable job. 🙁
Tiff
I looked it up! It’s called the Co-Op haha. Completely forgot. Yeah, I’d hold off on trying to visit the states due to the prices of traveling & what not. Although it’ll be a lot cheaper for you to dine & enjoy yourself when you’re actually here though. While you save up to visit the states, I’m just going to save up to visit Europe again haha.

I think celebrating with a family dinner is better than figuring out gifts 🙂 We celebrate Mother’s Day with a family dinner too, though we usually go out somewhere and ask my mom to pick the place. All of that food looks amazing!
Abalone Cove looks beautiful! It’s getting warmer here, and those photos make me want to go to the beach 🙂

That’s cute! My mom kind of just commandeers our holidays so whatever she says goes bahaha.
I’m excited for the summer for the warm weather, although it’s been super hot this week. My face melted off like 5 times.

What can you say about mom’s? They are mom’s. You love them no matter what and if sometimes you don’t so them appreciation they know you still love them and they are just the most amazing people in the world. 🙂 They deserve so much love! They give up so much just to let you live your own life. They accept you no matter what you do.
Seems like you had fun on Mother’s day! Congrats!

I decided to stay home. Read my blog for more on that. 🙂
I agree. I am over him though. I may think about him but the only reason why I do is because something is reminding me of him. Whether it is a song or someone reminding me of him aka my coworker, I only think about him when something reminds me of him. I didn’t realize that until you brought it up (that a lot of things were reminding me of him that is) but that is so true. When I first realized this my mood would change but I think it was mostly because of a sad song and PMS symptoms put together. hahahaha.
Reason 3 you gave me is exactly why I decided to stay home.
Thanks for #4. It has helped me so much! I will just keep reading it and it is amazing. 🙂 I completely agree with everything you are saying. Alabama is what I make it. I will make Alabama my home. 😀

Hey Erin, isn’t there a way you could reply to my comments on your site directly on your site because you use Disqus? I’m sure I’d get an e-mail notification telling me you replied. I think it’d be more appropriate that way so that our comments to one another are in a single thread on that specific subject.
Yes! We’re very lucky that our mothers are such wonderful people because we could’ve been unfortunate to be born to mothers that didn’t really want you at all!
anna
oo that feast, it’s gorgeous! and the coast! i am jealous of your mother’s day.
Shiki
THAT is one big feast! haha my family doesn’t celebrate events like this, nor do I ever care about to 😛 my parents freak out over birthdays and new years though -__- heh, I don’t like freaking out about birthdays, even mine…wait, especially mine. Not that kind of person, I guess.
It looks so nice to have outdoor barbecue for dinner, eh *o* I really wanna experience that.. too bad that I don’t live in a neighborhood :\ we used to do hotpot shabushabu for dinner but not anymore… also because I don’t eat dinner now anyway heh
Abalone Cove looks breathtaking! It has this beach atmosphere though it’s not one… then again, such a place is better than a crowded beach for vacation. I love your photographs! Beautiful shots as always 🙂

My family is really big on these holidays only because it’s one of the few days we can all really get together for a family reunion. There were about 20+ family members plus some friends so we had a lot of food!
Abalone Cove is indeed a beach haha. There were a good amount of people, I just photoshopped some of them out haha. Thanks for the compliment about my photos!

It’s awesome you put together a family dinner for your mom! The food looks delicious and it’s nice to see someone else who also shares a close relationship with their mother/family. It’s a support level of love that is undeniable 😀 keep in touch

Aw nah, I didn’t put together the family dinner for my mom. She put one together herself, I just made some food for her haha.

Abalone Cove looks so beautiful! And your mom sounds like a character. :p I remember meeting someone like that, but I don’t remember who it was. My late great grandmother would always give me a lot of things that I gave her. :p
I think your mother values the time more. 🙂
Liz
other people gave her*
wow i don’t even know HOW that typo happened! 😡

My mom indeed does have quite the personality! Sounds like your great grandmother was a re-gifter! My mom does the same too hahaha
Bonnie
Your family looks very happy and lovely 🙂 The meal looks sooooo delicious mmmm… I find it very hard to find my mother a gift, something that is special so we always just end up with a nice dinner! Abalone Cove looks very nice, especially the first photo of it!
Tiff
Thanks Bonnie! The food was pretty good! I guess our mothers can be difficult to shop for. My mom has everything, so I end up making something for her.
