My mom works really hard thus likes to spoil herself a lot, so you can only imagine what you could possibly give one of the best moms in the world for mother’s day, her anniversary, or her birthday. When I was in France a few weeks ago, she raised the spending limit on my credit card so that I could purchase her a Louis Vuitton purse! Since she can pretty much buy herself anything her heart desires–besides a G5 & a new house in Newport Coast–I decided to make her an herbal terrarium for a belated mother’s day & early anniversary & birthday present. She uses tons of herbs such as cilantro, dill, basil, & oregano in her cooking, so why not plant them for her to use?
Terrariums make great gifts to your mom, grandma, aunt, or anyone moving into a new home! They’re often filled with succulents, but I decided on planting herbs. Terrariums aren’t just pretty to stare at, they also bring fresh supplies of oxygen into your home. It was my first time planting herbs, so if any of them germinate by my parents’ anniversary, which is on the 15th, it’ll truly be the perfect gift for my mom. Dad may appreciate it…although he’d probably wish I planted a money tree instead.
DIY Herbal Terrarium
You will need:
- Natural potting soil for vegetables & herbs
- See-through jars or vases
- Activated carbon
- River pebbles or glass pebbles or marbles
- Moss (optional)
- Shovel, scoop, spoon, or small bowl
- Gloves
- Seeds for herbs
If you don’t feel like going through the process of buying seeds & waiting for the right season to plant them, just purchase the ready grown herbs, remove them from their pot, & place them in the jar. You will still need the soil & activated carbon regardless. The carbon enriches the soil & assists with the drainage.
Read the instructions for the carbon so that you don’t ruin the carbon to soil ratio. The order of the layers:
- Pebbles
- Activated carbon
- Soil
- Seeds
- Moss

If all goes well within the next 2 weeks, I’ll be sure to post pictures when the herbs begin to germinate. Pictures from my travels soon to follow.
I love this! I love DIYs period.
Thanks, Darianne!
After some hard work, nothing is better than spoiling yourself with things you like. It’s good to hear that your mom enjoys herself any way that she can. I’m sure she is definitely enjoying her new Louis Vuitton purse right now.
I have never heard of herbal terrariums before, but they do look nice to plant at home or use as a gift. I am definitely looking forward to seeing the progress of the terrarium.
Thank you for the correction :). A step in college means a step in the real world. Sounds like an interesting journey ahead. I have to take the CS/IS 101 course because it’s a requirement for my major. I’m taking 16 units for this semester. Classes here are really packed so I just got the classes that I could that aligns with my transfer plan. It’s the prerequisties that is holding me back.
Take care (:
One of them started sprouting already, but I want to wait until a week & a half to show you guys the progress of them. I’m really stoked that I actually planted something successfully hahaha. Hopefully I don’t end up drowning it in water or something.
Ahh, well you know that the first 2 weeks people are dropping & switching classes, so you might get a chance to sign up for a class you might want more. But whatever works. Hopefully you’ll just get good grades this first semester. If you don’t already know about it, you should check out http://assist.org. It’s really helped a lot of transfer students. You can select your CC & a university you’d like to transfer to & see if the classes count or transfer. 🙂
I so have to try this! I love herbs and I use them a lot when I cook, so this would be perfect to try out for my house =)
I think that’s awesome you made something beautiful like this for your mother. I think homemade gifts are the best gifts to give; they’re always heartfelt.
It’s been 5 days since I planted the herbs & they started sprouting a few days ago!! So I’m proud to say that even though I grew them off season, they’re still growing! 🙂 Definitely hope you give it a go & have fun watching your herbs grow. Having fresh ingredients within reach is pretty awesome, I must say. 😀
wow, what a sweet idea! this is way better than an LV bag in my opinion since this is unique and pretty much hand made! these are also really pretty and modern looking! i’ll definitely consider this for my grandma! my grandma keeps plants in the house with old pots…which is great (having plants indoors) but uh, not exactly the most asthetically pleasing for my eyes and they don’t match with the design of the room and they stick out like a sore thumb!
hahaha yeah well, my mom is pretty materialistic, but she does really appreciate me growing her some herbs for her. I hope you do make your grandma a terrarium! They’re really easy to make. You could always just plant some succulents instead of herbs so that the terrarium is low maintenance. Perhaps your terrarium for your grandma will match better for her house!
Oh, this is such a cute DIY craft that any mom would adore. I am definitely going to have to start visiting this particular site of yours more often than I do now. BTW, I love the picture of the Bubble Tea in the middle of all the DIY pictures. What flavor was it? 😀
Hi Jessica! It’s been a while!
The drink my mom got me was a Vietnamese one which had boba, as well as grass jelly & things. It’s called “che,” & that specific one had a specific name, but I forgot it! haha I prefer the simple flavors though. You know, jasmine green tea with boba or something.
I think this is really thoughtful! It’s cute and looks fun to make too. If I wasn’t afraid to get dirty or if anyone I know appreciates this kind of thing, I would totally make one for them!
Totally craving boba right now…but when am I ever not…?!
If you have a pair of gloves, your hands don’t get dirty.
Pretty cool DIY!!!
P.S stop by my blog. I am hosting a little giveaway and would love it if you joined :]
