Huckleberry’s Pastrami Sandwich.

Well, this is embarrassing! My last post said this upcoming post would center around my trip to the Bahamas with Josh & my family, but I can’t upload the video onto my Vimeo account because I reached my quota this week, so I’ll just have to wait until Saturday for it to refresh. Regardless, the next post will absolutely be an explosion of pictures from the Bahamas that your eyes will be beached out for the day. Hopefully you enjoy this picture food dump post. If it makes you hungry, mission accomplished.

Remember how I dabble in gardening & making terrariums? No? Well, I do, so I made an instructional video on how to make beach themed terrariums except filming with one hand & trying to plant with the other produced deplorable results. What do you do with a bunch of movie clips on how to make terrariums that are poorly focused, unstable, & nearly nauseating to watch due to the amount of instability? Why, you throw them into Lightroom, edit the heck out of the colors, slap on some downtempo song, & boom, you’ve got yourself something semi-watchable.

Brain food

Growing up in Huntington Beach, I was well adapted to our non-existent weather & took up figure skating on the weekends. My ice rink friends & I would walk on over to Huckleberry’s Sandwiches right across the street after our lessons in the morning for lunch. I introduced Huckleberry’s to some of my high school friends & we’d go there &/or Fuji’s every so often for our off-campus lunches. It’s been a while since I’ve had a bite at either restaurant so I thought I’d revisit & ran into some high school friends.

On one of our study dates, I bought Josh a pastrami sandwich from Huckleberry’s while I satisfactorily munched on a veggie sandwich. I figured Josh would devour the pastrami sandwich & still be hungry so I also got tacos from Fuji’s, which is just a door down from Huckleberry’s. The first taco is a shrimp taco with avocado followed by an avocado taco (vegetarian friendly), & ending with a fish taco. Obviously these choices weren’t exactly quinoa, kale, greek yogurt, & goji berry, but we stayed awake to get our work done. Look, don’t think I’m trying to paint Josh as some food hording monstrosity, okay? I ate some of the tacos too. He didn’t eat everything, sheesh. Don’t give him those judgmental looks!

True Life: I’m a Food Hording Monstrosity

Here we have pictures of a salmon sushi burrito from Samurai Burrito that are poorly posed because I ran out of creativity.

One Month Later: Creativity Came Back

I really need to get a nice tea cloth to use for backdrops because paper towels just aren’t cutting it. These shots of the Galaxy Chirashi Cup from Mitsuwa were taken on my new Nikon D5300 aka Honey Boo Boo. I’m itching to photograph anything & everything these days to take Honey Boo Boo out for a spin!

CUCINA Enoteca with Juliana

Juliana & I caught up over lunch last Wednesday at CUCINA Enoteca. It was my first time & definitely won’t be my last. I just ate my leftovers yesterday & my taste buds were so happy. This was my attempt at taking Honey Boo Boo out for a spin. Still working on not sucking at overhead shots.

Don’t forget to participate in my giveaway for your chance to win a free domain, hosting, & lots of loot! Also, I do have to delete your entries if you don’t follow directions so read carefully unless you don’t know how to or you’re too lazy, in which case I can’t really help you.

Quote of the week

“You seriously are getting really good with your food photography. Pictures of food from non professionals usually look terrible, but yours always have some class.” -Nick

DAW, I should just make a blurbs sub-domain to collect memorable quotes from people. I know I’ve said this before, but I feel as though I have to repeat myself to remind myself & others that you just can’t give up or else you’ll never make any progress. Whether it’s your career, goals, ambitions, hobbies, whatever it is, just don’t give up. Unless of course, you’re trying to chase after some person who is never going to reciprocate your love, then you should probably give it a rest & find someone who’s trying to chase you down & not the other way around.

I remembered your one terrarium posts! Even though you had some instability in the videos, you still made them work in the video. I could almost imagine how it must’ve felt holding a bigger than norm camera and trying to do what you do.

The pastrami looks delicious! You’re lucky that you got some nice food places around the community. We mostly have fast food or Mexican food around. I finally tried out a sushi burrito yesterday and I liked it! Finally, a sushi I can eat with my hands (besides the hand roll), haha.

I like your idea of the Chirashi cup! Have you tried making Tuna ahi tartare? CUCINA Enoteca looks like a really nice pizza place that makes you feel at home :).

It’s too bad you don’t have very many food options around your parts! I would’ve imagined you’d have lots being in LA & all, but I guess every neighborhood is different.

The chirashi cup was store purchased so I didn’t make it haha. I’ve made tuna tartare before & it’s really quite simple! It’s an expensive appetizer, but delicious nevertheless.

I try my best to be a green thumb, but a lot of my plants end up dying after several months, sooooo maybe I’m not so great at this terrarium making business.

I’m not even sure you need to be creative when you have a salmon sushi burrito in your hands! Anyhow, your photography is really beautiful and I like very much the way you edit your food pics.

Wow. I’m so hungry right now because of this post. I’m really amazed by the people who do food photography because I can’t honestly do it. I always end up eating my food before realizing I haven’t taken a picture of it yet.

    I love your photos!

Aw thanks, Bee-chan! Food photography is a lot more complex than people think it is because you’ve got to get the lighting right, white balance, position, minimize movement (tripods help), & you’ve got to style things well. I’m still such a huge noob when it comes to food styling, so I’m experimenting a lot. I used to eat my food before I realized I hadn’t taken a picture of it yet too, so I just made a habit of taking out my camera so I’d remember. Thanks for stopping by & leaving a comment. 🙂

Oh my goodness why are you doing this to me, girl????
All I can smell is my mum cooking food downstairs (I love coming home! haha) and now all I can see is photo after photo of delicious food. I am not even exaggerating when I say I am almost drooling everywhere. Wow.

Haha that quote is so true :’) You should definitely make a quotes list – even if it’s not public it’d just be a nice personal thing to look through and get all nostalgic and whatnot every so often.
I’m still laughing at the fact I went on Skeletons the other day (I don’t even know why, I just somehow ended up there on a random site hopping session) and I’m pretty proud that some rubbish I sprouted about Nicole farting is in your signature. Success!

Your photos always makes me hungry!! You are one of the best foodies I have seen online and keep it going! The sandwiches looks great, I’m sure each and every one of them tastes different and has each of its own uniqueness. I love the sushi burrito and the Galaxy Chirashi Cup. It makes me almost want to try and make something similar!

Aw thanks, Tess! Your comment means a lot to me, especially when I come back from viewing a bunch of my favorite cook blogs & look at my own thinking, “sigh…why do I even try…it’ll never be as great…” hahaha. I’m glad you enjoy my photos. 😀

You should definitely try to make something similar to the chirashi cup if you have the ingredients. I think the vegetarian sandwich is a lot cheaper to make though!

Omg SANDWICH. Not sure if you remember but I’m such a sandwich person *o* /drools everywhere/ obviously sandwich > burgers ha! I love it when they cut sandwiches to halves and then wrap the paper around it haha..sometimes, I pretend that I’m eating a burrito (just because there’s barely burritos around here ugh and no, we don’t have taco bells. damnnn I really want taco bells in my life, at least once! *pathetic*)…. no burritos, no tacos either. sigh. hence I settle down for kebab, the fast food doner kebab one… it’s so rare to find a turkish restaurant here too… i really need to taste original, real kebabs ugh

SUSHI BURRITO. KELP! *dead by nachos* dang it. you have all the good stuff there overseas T___T the second picture of the sushi feels like, “hey yo people, look at me and my awesome drool-worthy self! be jeluz, be jeluzzz”

oh my god you named your camera honey boo boo? W H Y. lol it’s just hilarious… I never watched it but it creeps me out. the kid, i mean. then again all kids creep me out x___x they are evil underneathhhh

I like the shots of the chirashi cup 🙂 um although the last one is uh..slanted? ^^;; nevertheless, the others look good… do you read / have kinfolk? because they have kinfolk feels to them :3

overhead shots are really nice ;w; i love that angle. but it’s a hassle when you’re not tall enough or if the space around you is limited; these are the two problems I often faced >__< oh man every time i criticize someone, i feel bad (because it's not like i'm a great photographer myself so..)

haha yes, I remember. I’m not a sandwich person, but Josh certainly is! I don’t care too much for burgers either. Wow, hahaha I guess things between buns = meh. I’m a noodle person! 😀

Huckleberry’s wraps the sandwich first & then cuts it in half. It’s a sub sandwich standard I suppose! Taco Bell…hahahaha yeesh. I haven’t had that in the longest time. California is just right above Mexico so we get a lot of amazing Mexican food here. A lot of my friends who have moved to different countries or states tell me how Mexican food where they are just isn’t the same. Apparently in Germany, they use BBQ sauce in Mexican food……what are you doing…..

I love turkish food!! There’s not much around in my area, but in LA, there were tons.

I LOVE HONEY BOO BOO. She is absolutely hilarious. The show is my guilty pleasure. Her mom is a bit of a disaster, but she loves her girls nevertheless. Honey Boo Boo is just such a fascinating child. I don’t understand how you can think kids are creepy!! They’re so cute! Adults are much more evil than children are…..I think you’ve seen way too many horror movies or something. But then again, I don’t really understand why Asian girls like looking like a doll & dying their hair orange so, different strokes for different folks!

The last photo of the chirashi cup isn’t slanted, it’s just the side view of the cup to show you the layers of the contents. I don’t subscribed to Kinfolk, but I do love looking at the website. That’s the best compliment yet! Hah, I love their style!!

I stood on a step stool to get those overhead shots hahaha so I feel you on the height ordeal.

That was a pretty video! It sounds tough to film with one hand and do things with the other. I already have issues holding my DSLR with one hand due to its weight, so I’m sure I’d be shaky too, haha.

Man, all of that food looks so good. I said it before, but I wish we had a sushi burrito place like that here! And is that eggs on pizza? That looks awesome 😀

I’ve always thought your food photography looked great by the way!

Thanks! Haha woman, you know what’s up: the struggle is real!! Your DSLR is so much heavier than mine because it’s FF right? Mine isn’t so it’s itty bitty, but still…I’m so thankful for quick shutter speeds or else my photos would be all blurry.

Yep! Eggs on pizza! It’s actually pretty authentic to Italian recipes, at least ones that call for eggs. It’s delicioussssssss if you love eggs.

So much food! I’m drooling. I’ll watch your video later but I’m sure it’s amazing! It’s incredible to see you putting all of your talents to use. And seriously, your food pictures are incredible. Next on my list of things to save for (once I’m done spending on the Philippines and stuff) is a nice camera. I want to be able to post some nicer pictures on my blog. I’ve been relying on my iPhone just because that’s all I have time/money for now.

      Thanks for the compliments!

I hope you get to save up enough money to buy yourself a nice camera for your trip! You may lose the camera, but you might also not & come home with some beautiful photos of your trip!

iPhone photos aren’t the end of the world. There are tons of iPhone users with instagrams that are solely iPhone taken photos & all of them are gorgeous. It’s really amazing, but it’s the photographer, not so much the camera in those cases. You just have to have steady hands, good lighting, & nice framing. 😀

It looks so amazing. Just…mother watering yumminess!

Also, it’s nice to know someone can build a terrarium…I tried…it was bad. I killed it. I don’t know how but I cannot seem to build a successful terrarium no matter how bad I want one, lol.

I think the biggest issue with terrariums is that you either need to have a hole drilled at the bottom of the glass to let out excess water or to make sure the activated carbon you put in is mixed well. You don’t want to over water the terrarium because that will lead to mold growth in the terrarium that can kill the succulents. They’re really easy to put together & taking care of them is even easier! Give it another whirl, or you could just make a terrarium with air plants so you don’t have to really worry about killing it at all so long as you soak them overnight every 2 weeks!
